Highway 16A Improvements

Spruce Grove, Alberta

Description

The City of Spruce requested Select to assist with their plans to incorporate a new concrete style median within their main transportation corridor, Highway 16A. Their landscape architect had designed the look of the median style they expected, and Select was charged with the challenge to prepare detailed engineering plans that included their new landscaped median, storm sewer drainage system, surface drainage collection and methodology of constructing these components along a busy six lane divided highway. The design was completed in time for a spring tender and award in 2014. Specific construction timelines were required to ensure that the final pavement overlay could be achieved prior to winter conditions in the fall. Key challenges included the conversion of a main intersection into a unique intersection allowing U-turn capability to allow public access to local businesses along an already restricted accessible service road. This very successful project was completed on-time with very few construction deficiencies and under budget. Communication was the key factor that kept all parties involved up to date and on task throughout the project.
